Classical music is truthfully not something that I often indulge in. After all, a workout is best accompanied by Kylie Minogue, and my Buick likes to rev up during rush hour traffic to Kid Cudi. However, today, in honor of the Maui Classical Music Festival, I re-tuned my Pandora radio station to snugly fit in some Bach and Beethoven between the regulars.
It turns out that classical music is just as entertaining as the rest of my playlist; I certainly found myself less hasty to use the “skip” option than I usually am. To get those neuron transmitters firing, take it one step further, and sprawl out with a notepad and pencil. Turn on the classical tunes, and sketch whatever images the music brings to mind. This is a good plan for those who find regular meditation to feel similar to a kindergarten nose-in-the-corner time-out. Whether you hail from the the devoutly religious, the “you-die-and-worms-eat-you” creed, or anything in-between, listening to un-imposing, love-inducing classical music at our lovely island churches will be an enlightening experience, minus the $2000 plane ticket to Tibet. Here’s your guide to hit up these sweet spots throughout the week:
Thursday, April 29th @ 1:45 pm – School Concert at Kihei Charter School
Saturday, May 1st @ 7pm – Three B’s: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms at Makawao Union Church
Monday, May 3rd @ 7pm – Sunset Soiree: Classics to Crossovers at Keawala’i Congregationa Chruch in Makena
Wednesday, May 5th @ 7pm – Hana Community Concert at Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana
Friday, May 7th @ 7pm – Verve and Virtuosity at Makawao Union Church
