The quixotic motivation behind my usual prescription to Adbuster‘s “Buy Nothing Day” is trumped by the desire to support local businesses. The holidays doll a bankroll beating regardless, so why make your pocketbook suffer evermore when there are great deals to be had? Of course, great local establishments abound island-wide (stay tuned for MauiTime‘s gift guide, due-out December 9), but I for this blog post I’ll dish a little neighborly love for our peeps on Market Street.
Requests is offering used CDs/DVDs for $5, new CDs/DVDs/new LPs at $3-off the ticket price, and used LPs at 50percent off. Turntables are 20-50percent off, and all clothing, apparel, and flags are 20percent off. Of course there’s also local thread masters MauiThing, the gallery-esque purveyors of Hawaiiana, Native Intelligence, and a slew of consignment, antique and bath & body boutiques along the street. So a jump start on playing Santa, and support local by buying local this Black Friday.
UPDATE – PREACH ‘N PRACTICE:
OK. No way am I gonna tell you to hit up local stores and not do so myself. So, I saved $3 on my brother’s Christmas present (the boys are Requests know my brother’s taste/library better than I do… for shame), and couldn’t help but snagging a few half-off used LPs for myself (50cents a pop). While I love listening to vinyl, I can’t quite decide what I like more — the music or the cover art. This buying excursion, cover art ruled. Speaking of art, their neon concert posters make great holiday gifts, too.
Spectacular Sounds by “the Incomparable” Robin Hood Band, and Tiajuana Christmas? How can you go wrong?
