BAMP PROJECT wakes Maui up with artists that challenge themselves and their listeners with their rich, exhilarating music. Matisyahu is a Hasidic Jew who hails from New York and has found, or better said, created, his niche in reggae music that explores religious conviction without sounding trite. His music is accessible to people of all belief-systems, drawing people in on the basis of the passion he himself feels for culture and religion. Matisyahu’s new album, light, is an exploration of his years studying the Torah, with an emphasis of the story of the Seven Beggars by Reb Nachman, guided by his teacher Ephram Rosenstein. “I feel this theme, though written as a fairytale in the 1800’s, is very relevant to many of the struggles that we face today,” Matisyahu says. “From child soldiers to child sex slaves to everyday people trying to awaken their broken hearts.” matisyahuworld.com
