THURSDAY, APR. 5
TOP QUIZ – Oh, you think you’re sooo smart, huh? Good! We’re glad you’re giving yourself the credit you deserve. Why not also give yourself a chance to prove your gray matter’s fine mettle by forming or joining a team and taking on the challenge of Dog & Duck’s weekly Quiz Night, hosted by the lovely Laura, aka “Bikini Blond” (friend of the paper and a former co-hostess on The A-Train). No cover. Dog & Duck Irish Pub (1913 S. Kihei Rd.); 875-9669
EXOTICA FOR YOUR EARS, EYES N’ EVERYTHING – Oh, the paradisiacal Pacific and its ubiquitous utopia. Hyper-saturated sunsets kiss the sea, green sparks fly and all the rest. Coat its accoutrements in chic patina and you’ve got something timeless, tragic and titillating. And, lore has it, if you have sex on the beach without getting sand in your ass, you’ll cum coconut water. But, wait. Stop. Take a look around you. All that fun, freaky tiki shit ain’t real–at least, not readily so. Surprise! It’s a tourist trap! Palm fronds pulled over a centuries-old colonial hole! Welcome to the cinder block jungle, baby… Nonetheless, when life gives you ice, shave it and soak it in sugar syrup. Such quixotic bygones can indeed be imitated or imagined. However it takes careful crafting: A well-placed leopard skin. The perfect vintage cocktail dress. Exotica on the airwaves. A slimy wink from a lounge lizard… Tonight, get it all thanks to the auricular ambiance of DJs Cudra Clover, Benny Lava and Toben, of BSOS Radio (a live-streaming Internet and LP FM radio station broadcast from the Valley Isle). Plus, it’s the opening of an exhibition by California artist Doug Dorr, who paints pictures of tiki-esque creatures. To help you celebrate, featured drink specials include $3 Heinekens, $4 Sneaky Tikis and $5 Blue Hawaiians. No cover. 9pm-close. South Shore Tiki Lounge (1913 S. Kihei Rd.); 874-6444; southshoretikilounge.com / bsosradio.org

WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY – No foolin’, if you only make it to one Maui Town Party this month, April’s First Friday in Wailuku town is where it’s at. Maui Thing’s mainstage music is fresh and lively with headliners LiA LiVE & The Kryptones and The Freeradicals Projekt. Meanwhile, there’s an egg hunt for keiki and the historic Iao Theater hosts free screenings of It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown and Here Comes Peter Cottontail. Plus, on Main Street, it’s Body Alive’s bangin’ one-year anniversary bash and the grand opening of Exotic Eye Tattoo (both proudly helmed by the sweetest, sexiest wahine proprietor, Rachel Gonzalez). To celebrate, Body Alive’s monthly Exhale! event goes big with a performance by Kit Kat Club Cabaret, funky beats by DJ Nanda, yoga and meditation sessions, fashion and jewelry shows, and Coconut Glen’s onolicious ice cream. “SILENCE AND NOISE,” A PHILANTHROPIC ART SHOW TO BUILD SCHOOLS IN AFRICA – Fri. and Sat., Apr. 6-7. Art with Heart is a student-run philanthropy club which raises funds for the nonprofit Build Africa by showcasing Seabury Hall students’ visual and performance art, sharing it with the community in a way that can “make a positive difference in the world.” The Art with Heart group was started by students Ariella Brandon and Kelsey Greenway, who “believe that through education the doors to creativity are opened, and through creativity, communities are formed.” The “Silence and Noise” art shows begin at 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, in the cafeteria, with a gallery showing of painting, photography, drawing and design. Then at 7pm, patrons move to Seabury’s performance art center for presentations of music, dance and poetry readings. Other than art, T-shirts, bracelets and refreshments will be for sale, and 100 percent of the events’ proceeds benefit Build Africa’s school-building mission. Last November, Art with Heart’s inaugural events raised $3,500 for the charity. $12 students / $18 adults. 5:30pm both days. Seabury Hall cafeteria (Olinda Rd., Makawao); 573-1257; seaburyhall.org / build-africa.org

IMUA FAMILY SERVICES PRESENTS PATRICK HENRY HUGHES IN CONCERT – These days, “inspiring” is a grossly overused word. That sucks when such a word’s needed to help express the breadth and depth of a man like Patrick Henry Hughes–a virtuoso pianist, vocalist and trumpet player who was born without eyes or the ability to straighten his arms and legs. Hughes tours the globe giving concerts to sold-out crowds, his concerts accompanied by a presentation by his father who talks about his personal journey raising a child with disabilities and what that means for parents. For Hughes’ Maui show this Wednesday, the Maui High School Band will also perform. This event is part of an outreach campaign by Imua Family Services, celebrating its 65 years of service on Maui to children with developmental delays, disabilities and special needs. $10 keiki 12-years-old and younger / $20 adults. 7pm. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org
