Art contest! Japanese art! Manga!
It’s for the upcoming 15th annual Maui Matsuri Festival, to be held on Saturday, May 16 at the University of Hawaii Maui College Pilina Building Student Lounge. The contest (sponsored by Ben Franklin Maui and the 11th so far) will have two categories–traditional Japanese art and Manga.
Judging will take place across three age divisions: 3rd-5th grades; 6th-8th grades; and 9th-12th grades. And yes, there will be prizes–First Place wins $75, Second Place gets $50 and Third Place wins $25.
Here are the rules (please pay careful attention to this part), which were handed down by means of an Apr. 14 news release from the Maui Matsuri Festival:
Participants can enter by submitting hand drawn work (not computer generated) on paper not to exceed 8.5 x 11 inches (no frames or mounted pieces). All mediums are allowed: pencil, colored pencil, pen, etc. All Manga entries should depict a Manga/Anime character in a festival setting and all Traditional Art entries should depict a Japanese landscape theme. Each entry must have an official entry form, along with signed disclaimer, taped to the back of the artwork to be accepted.
Get all that? Good, because there’s more:
Entries will be accepted at the Manga & Art Exhibit in the Pilina Building during the Maui Matsuri festival between 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Judging will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. Winners will be announced at the entertainment stage at 4:00 p.m. Artwork should be picked up at the exhibit area at 6:00 p.m. Otherwise, bring a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of artwork. Artwork will not be returned if an envelope is not provided.
As you probably know, the Maui Matsuri festival is a three-day event that features Japanese culture. It starts on May 8 at 6:30pm at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. Movie night (May 15, 7pm) takes place UH Maui College and will feature a screening of Kikaider Reboot. The festival itself starts at 2pm on May 16 at UH Maui College. Admission is free to all events. The May 16 festivities also include (of course) a variety of contests, including cosplay, video-gaming, hanafuda and natto- and saimin-eating.
