The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation donated a $1.1 million grant to the J. Walter Cameron Center. The grant will provide funding for ongoing infrastructure improvements, helping the Cameron Center complete the third phase of a six-year comprehensive rehabilitation effort aimed at ensuring the center’s long-term viability as a one-stop community services facility.
The Cameron Center houses 14 nonprofit agencies that serve a total of 60,000 Maui County residents–of which 30,000 are considered low-income. The Center is a critical component of the infrastructure supporting Maui’s health and social service providers by providing low-cost office and program space.
“We are thrilled to receive such incredible support from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation,” said Cameron Center Executive Director Cesar Gaxiola. “The Cameron Center was built in the 1970s and we now must make crucial and costly repairs to continue serving Maui’s non-profit community and the people of Maui for years to come.”
The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States, provides approximately $100 million in annual grants to nonprofits that provide direct services to low-income and vulnerable individuals and families, primarily in the US and Israel. Grants are focused on meeting basic needs and enhancing an individual’s ability to meet those needs with emphasis on older adults, the Jewish community, and our priority communities of Maryland, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Chicago, and Hawaii.
Current resident nonprofits at the Cameron Center include American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, ARC of Maui County, Best Buddies, Hui No Ke Ola Pono, Ka Lima O Maui, Legal Aid Services of Hawaii, Maui Chamber of Commerce, Maui Community Mental Health Center, Maui County Office on Aging, Maui Mediation Services, Mental Health America of Maui County, M.E.O’s Kahi Kamali`i program, Nā Keiki o Emalia, and Pacific Cancer Foundation.
Earlier phases of the Cameron Center’s rehabilitation effort–more than $3 million in substantial facility improvements—include the installation of a Solar PV system, and extensive interior and exterior renovations. Phase 3 is focused on improving energy-efficiency and protecting the health and safety of facility users. Completion of construction is expected by this August.
