BLAME THE VOTERS!
I am appalled that your newspaper would list Big Beach as the Best Swimming Beach on Maui (Best of Maui, July 19, 2012). Are you truly unaware of the number of people that have been paralyzed at Big Beach? We have had so many patients young, old, tourists and residents that will never walk again after being tossed by a wave at Big Beach. Your article lists only the beauty and none of the dangers.
How many tourists will go to Big Beach and go home on a stretcher? I think you need to interview some of our ER physicians and our neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Rogers who I am sure would be delighted to give you an ear full. In fact, I think you need to do a front page article on this and also surfer’s myelopathy.

EH BRAH!
Kudos to for recently making the annual Eh Brah Special Issue (July 12, 2012) all about traffic-related submissions. Reckless and dangerous driving is rampant here on the island. It was important to show the utter lack of respect so many people have for the law and for other drivers. Instead of just publishing the rants, you could have one-upped the article by offering solutions to the problems.
Here’s one suggestion: Install cameras at every intersection and send automatic, expensive traffic tickets to all those who run red lights. Maui County would not only make a lot of money, but they’d be praised for doing something to insure the safety of all drivers. After a few hundred dollars in repeat tickets, I venture to guess drivers would change their ways and red-light running would no longer be an issue on Maui.

WHEN SKATERS ATTACK OTHER SKATERS
“From experience I tell people if you’re over 20, don’t start skating?” (Letters, July 3, 2012). Wow, Jon Unitas (seriously, couldn’t he come up with a more original name than the ‘70s footballer?) must be some world class skater… and under the age of 20 as well? What this doof doesn’t get is that most of us “old guys” aren’t “starting” to skate, most of us are die hard skaters from back in the day when Tony Alva was ripping up pools in SoCal and urethane wheels just replaced the old “clay/ball bearing wheels.”
I’m an old dude who still skates. I grew up in SoCal, riding empty pools, homemade plywood ramps and the L.A. County aqueduct system. In the late ‘70s, skateparks popped up all around our area. Yeah, I’m not as crazy as I used to be–I mainly longboard the streets of Wailuku, but I have two young sons who shred the Keopuolani park, Kihei park and the new Lahaina park, and they can hold their own against some of the older teen riders. They’re taught to respect everyone in the park. Besides, us old guys are usually the ones who work for a living and our tax dollars help pay for these parks. So instead of badmouthing other skaters, maybe you should thank them because your pre-pubescent, freeloading, no job-having butt surely didn’t pay for the park.
