Being a mother can be rewarding but it’s not one of those jobs that comes with a lot of recognition. Moms work hard behind the scenes handing out hugs, drying tears, driving to all manner of destinations, passing out snacks, making dinner, reading at story time, negotiating sibling peace and tucking tired babes into bed. The dirty laundry never ends but mothers fearlessly press on with the job. Of course, there’s one day out of the year that honors moms. It’s nice dedicating the second Sunday in May to mothers everywhere. It’s not enough, of course, but we’ll take it.
On this day, it’s easy to honor mom with a just few minutes of off-duty time at the spa. In case you’re strapped for ideas on what to get her, we asked a few spa experts for their special Mother’s Day treat recommendations, to make it easy on you.
Because that’s what moms do.
Restorative Spa Time
Spa Wailea is the newest day spa with a tried and true holistic approach to beauty. “Our exclusive private label Spa Maui product line contains all natural and organic ingredients sourced from exquisite Hawaiian ingredients,” says Spa Manager Keala Renee Lono. “All formulas are unique to any ingredient combinations found anywhere else in the world. Within our product choices are natural skin care lines that will assist in every skin condition. We also offer aromatherapy blends at our apothecary in order to further customize your spa experience.” Their most sought after beauty treatment is the Maui Nui 110 minute Radiant Beauty Facial. It’s hydrating and nourishing, and uses high quality seed and nut oils, pure plant hydrosols, plant extracts and natural essential oils to support dehydrated and sun damaged skin. It also uses a luxurious 24K Gold and Collagen mask. Spa Wailea welcomes you in with a deeply relaxing and tranquil spa experience, the Mommy and Me Spa Pedicure or Manicure on ergonomically developed mani and pedi loungers.
The philosophy behind one of Maui’s most modern spas is a unique and customized approach where guests partake in creating their own product with an apothecary consultant. At the Awili Spa and Salon in Andaz when you have designed the perfect potion they keep the recipe on file so you or your significant other can gift it, they ship too. Spa Director Jackie Yulo shares her five essential ingredients and steps to skin care: “First, coconut milk is an amazing bath soak. It’s deeply hydrating and creates a relaxing bath experience at the end of a long day. Afterwards your whole body is feeling soft, silky and smooth. Second, raw honey on the face is an indulgent way to fight against bacteria and reduce any inflammation due to acne or irritation. Mixing honey with a touch of cinnamon makes an amazing facial mask. Third, fresh avocado mixed and applied to hair is amazing for promoting strong hair growth. It’s easy to create and can be used as a mask while you are soaking in the tub. Fourth, always keep papaya in the house! Not only is papaya amazing for the digestive system it can also relieve pain from jellyfish stings. You can slice it and put pieces in the freezer for emergency needs. Fifth, baking soda can be used as a detox treatment for your scalp. It’s a great way to remove buildup and re-energize your hair follicles.”
Cos Bar offers the finest in luxury makeup and skincare from around the world. They also have exclusive fragrances like Tom Ford Private Blend. Choose from Natura Bisse from Barcelona, Amore Pacific from Asia Pacific, Cleu De Peau from Japan, La Prairie from Switzerland and La Mer, Sisley, Creed, among others. Skin can become congested, tired, dull with the weather changes and manager Katie Matthews suggests coming in and trying their new facial room for Mothers Day. She says Natura Bisse is still leading the industry in breakthrough technology. Try their Diamond Life Fusion youth biomarker serum, which rejuvenates the skin back in time an average of 3.9 years, but takes just seven days.
Interlacing Technology & Indigenous offerings
Four Seasons Spa is offering a high-tech weight-loss program that uses a low-level cold laser called the i-Lipo. Sessions take 20 minutes and target challenging areas such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, under-arms and neck. The session is painless, there’s no down-time and cells aren’t damaged. They also offer nutrition analysis to maintain the fabulous results. “This is the intelligent version of Liposuction at $450 per session,” says Spa Director Pat Makozak. For Mother’s Day, the spa encourages relaxation longevity with their “Buy 4, get 1 more” offer because they feel Mom is worth it and should be pampered on more than just one day out of the year.
Transform with Science
The philosophy behind the Fairmont Kea Lani’s Willow Stream Spa are treatments that drive results. The new spa offers the latest in technology like the K-Lift facial that provides instant firming and tightening of skin, and the revolutionary WaveMotion massage table that tilts, pivots and spins 360 degrees to give a weightless stretching sensation. Willow’s product lines include Kerstin Florian International, Jane Iredale and Ala Lani Bath & Body. The locally-sourced product line Ala Lani uses all organic local ingredients gathered in Hawaii. The scrubs, clays and lotions are phenomenal for skin. The spa also uses pure kukui nut oil and Awa root to offer a locally-inspired experience. “For Moms, all you need is a little lift and a lot of love through the hands of our experienced spa therapists,” says Paola Perin, Spa Director. Choose from the Tighten and Transfor Ultra high performance peel for neck, decollete and face with red LED lights, or the Kukui deep tissue massage. Both guarantee 90 minutes of pure mommy time.

Honoring The Individual
At Body Therapeutics in Paia, the therapists intuitively listen to what each body is saying and they listen to what the guest is requesting. They take these sources of information and give their guests individual attention and expertise like no other. “We understand that massage is expensive and time consuming and we want everyone to be really pleased with their experience,” says owner Claudia Imperato. “As we age, strenuous exercise and stressful lives can push us over the edge.” In their philosophy, maintaining the body with massage can be the solution to continuing active lifestyles. Moms can choose from any of their top five treatments: lomi lomi, deep tissue, couples massage and aromatherapy.

Sanctuary For The Transformational Journey
Lemurian Seed Crystals were the inspiration for the Lumeria Crystal Spa. Spa Managing Partner Cecilia Hercik is bringing back ancient healing practices from around the world in hopes of restoring the body and mind. Bring the Mommy Makeover of your dreams into reality with their crystal healing and mystic readings, reflexology, shiatsu and their unique meditative massage, where they employ myofascial techniques with yoga nidra. They also have a six-series neurolinguistic program of weight management.
Green Medicine Maui
At Green Medicine Maui, licensed acupuncturist Jessica Montana says that the best way to battle dark spots under the eye is by tonifying the kidney. “Since the face is a map of the whole body, beneath the eyes correlates to kidney energy,” says Montana. Connecting herbal body wraps, Chinese herbs and nutrition, chiropractic and weight-loss programs, Green Medicine takes the alternative route to wellness. They suggest the Cosmetic Acupuncture and face suction cups for Mom–her face will be more relaxed after one treatment.
Holly Huden’s specialty is helping ladies (and gentlemen) achieve healthy beautiful skin with natural homemade products. “The coming of spring can really dry out the skin and hair as well,” says Huden. “All the moisture in the atmosphere is being sucked into the earth leaving the air dry and full of pollen and dust which stick to us and further deplete our skin and hairs moisture.” For moms heading to the beach, she recommends, “no [face] makeup at the beach because even though your makeup may be spf, you’re still sweating and clogging your pores. Going in and out of the ocean causes build-up on top of your makeup, which can clog pores. It’s really just a recipe for dirt and bacteria to get trapped. Just wear a hat for shade as well as a bit of oil free, made-for-face sunblock.”
MauiTime readers have voted Katy Grace the best waxing in Best of Maui. When hair manicuring or facials are needed look for her at the Hive in Paia, formerly Grace Beauty Day Spa.

One of a Kind Wellness
Enjoy the lush setting of Hana from the unique indoor outdoor spa at Travaasa Hana. Their new signature treatment, the Hana Organic Cocomint Signature Body Treatment and Massage, incorporates Hana-grown cacao in a luxurious scrub and coconut mint massage oil from a candle. Organic coconut heated compresses are used to relax and soften tight muscles while a coconut aloe facial mask nourishes skin. “We strive to give our guests a relaxing, rejuvenating experience and offer 60-minute treatments instead of 50-minute treatments,” says spa manager Monique Jutila. “Our therapists connect with guests and serve them noni mango juice with a cool oshibori cloth, all at a very relaxed pace. Our guests never feel rushed. Our treatment and retail products are carefully selected to provide the most organic, pure options for guests.” For a Mothers’ Day treat, she recommends the Lokelani Rose Body Treatment and Massage. It incorporates organic roses and decadent rose scented oils to soothe the skin and calm the mind and body. The treatment starts with an exfoliating milk scrub, infused with rose oil. Then there’s a relaxing massage with rose-scented oil, a warm rose compress and a pomegranate facial mask.
The Integrative Path to Wellness
At the Ritz Carlton Spa Kapalua, spring renewal embraces a regimen of spa, salon and fitness. Trainer and massage therapist Claudio Micco offers pilates and yoga fitness classes with Yogabalm, an organic peppermint balm that’s applied at the last 10 minutes of class with warming towels around the neck to penetrate the muscles. The pores are infused with a blend of pure plant extracts that detox, elevate your mood and improve blood flow. Head to their 9:15 Yoga Flow on Mother’s Day for the experience and stop by the spa for a spring renewal treatment after your meditation.
Heavenly Magnificence Of Ka‘anapali
The Heavenly Spa at Westin Maui celebrates 10 years of offering the best views from any relaxation lounge. It looks directly over Ka‘anapali Beach’s white sands and blue ocean. “When I find something that works for me, I become intensely loyal,” says Director of Spa Shawn Hallum. “I’ve recently added a new product to my daily regime, the Hualani Pineapple and Passion Fruit Crème Lotion which we use in our signature body treatment, the Hualani Heavenly Fruit Scrub. It’s deeply moisturizing and puts me in Hawaii-mode with the fresh and tropical scent.” All their Hualani products are made in Hawaii with locally grown fruit. Their signature facial, the Heavenly Lift Organic Facial, combines EmerginC’s organic products with NuFace micro-current technology. It’s perfect for mom.
Unique And Sustainable Therapy
At the Spa Helani in the Westin Villas, their philosophy toward combining the best European spa therapy with touches of Hawaiian and Asian therapies has created a unique menu that takes you around the world. “Though some guests may not be avid spa goers, we are seeing more guests buying homecare products to use in the quiet privacy of their resort villas,” says Spa Director Sarah Hisey. “We take pride in sourcing unique and sustainable retails items for our spa–including clothing, footwear, body and skin care.” Sign Mom up for a Polynesian ritual with a reflexology add-on. The reflexology uses pressure points along the feet to relieve stress and improve wellness.
Preventative Medicine And Skin Care
The Aloha Clinic in Lahaina practices a medical approach to wellness with results. It’s a family medicine clinic that also offers skin care services, with an aesthetician and massage therapist in house. “This year we introduced PRP [Platelet Rich Plasma] skin treatments to the clinic,” says Dr. Betsy Schusser. “In this procedure, a small specimen of the patient’s blood is used to isolate the platelet fraction that contains a variety of growth factors. The platelet rich plasma is then injected back into the same patient, into the areas of damage or excessive aging to rejuvenate the skin. When this is combined with dermal fillers, such as Juvederm or Voluma, it has become popularly referred to as a Liquid–or ‘Vampire’–Facelift.” There’s always room for pampering, but how about their Hydrafacial, which is a four-in-one resurfacing treatment that includes a deep pore cleansing, hydro-dermabrasion, chemical peel and nutrient infusion. It takes about 30 minutes and has no down-time–a bride can do it on her wedding morning. A 50-minute full body massage with a hot paraffin hand treatment and a deep scalp massage with aromatherapy for $99 is their Mother’s Day treat.
