A new, comprehensive Ocean Safety Guide for Maui County is now available online, thanks to a collaborative effort by county, state and federal officials. The safety guide can be easily read, downloaded or printed at the Maui County website.
“The beaches of Maui County are beautiful but not without dangers, as with any natural habitat,” said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Most of our residents have learned how to respect the power of the ocean and hopefully we can educate our visitors do the same. We encourage everyone to download and share this new safety guide to help communicate these important safety messages to all beach-goers.”
The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Ocean Safety Division–along with the Department of Fire and Public Safety and the Maui Police Department–partnered with the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard to develop the content for the Ocean Safety Guide.
The brochure includes a map of County beach parks that have lifeguards, as well as tips on how to deal with rip currents and shorebreaks, and how to avoid chance encounters with sharks. The County is working to develop Molokai and Lanai-specific brochure templates as well.
Maui County officials are also encouraging schools, service groups, non-profits and other organizations to distribute the safety guide for educational purposes.
The brochure can be viewed and downloaded at Mauicounty.gov/OceanSafety. The County also produced a new ocean safety video, which you can view here:
