What can we say, except that ‘Ulalena is a great show. Imagine the history of Hawaii and the Hawaiian people as done by Cirque du Soleil. It’s visually appealing, like that history, and also quite sad, like that history. “‘Ulalena is a wind unique to Maui, as said in the Kumulipo, an ancient Hawaiian creation chant, as well as a red-yellow colored rain revealed by the twilight,” states the show’s publicity materials. “Like a soft wind in the mist of light.” It’s been running at the Maui Theatre for more than a dozen years for a reason. 878 Front St., Lahaina; 808-856-7900; Mauitheatre.com. @apignataro

Best Gallery

Peter Lik has 15 or so galleries around the world that sell giant copies of his high-high-high definition landscape photographs. One of the them is in Lahaina, on Front Street with a bunch of other commercial galleries. Most of the shots in his gallery here tend to the natural world shots–streams, canyons, forests–but on my last visit I lost myself in a shot he’d taken of Manhattan from one of the high-rises. It was mesmerizing. 712 Front St., Lahaina; 808-661-6623; Lik.com. @apignataro

The museum itself has the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts in the county, many of which date to the missionary days. Their archives, which are open to researchers, have a further 2,000 artifacts and 8,000 photographs. Missionary teacher Edward Bailey constructed the house itself in 1833, and its been on the National and Hawaii Registers of Historic Places since 1972. 2375A Main St., Wailuku; 808-244-3326; Mauimuseum.org. @apignataro

Best Place To Hear MauiTime Staff Make Fools Of Themselves [STAFF PICK]
Every Friday from 3-6pm, Johnny A, Old Hickory, Cuzin Larry, Engineer Gary and Producer Cara do the A-Train radio show on KAOI 96.7FM and 1110AM. And (nearly) every Friday, MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo and Editor Anthony Pignataro stop by the station to chat about what’s in that week’s edition of the paper, pertinent issues around the island or just something we think is important and amusing to listeners. And though usually the things Russo and Pignataro say are more important than amusing, they’re getting better. The whole show’s great, but the MauiTime segment runs 3:20-3:40pm.
