Lease negotiations can be a sad fate for many restaurant and bar business owners in Maui, and now it’s happening to Stella Blues in Kihei. This was posted last night on their Facebook page:
I’m very saddened to say. After 23 years Stella Blues Cafe is closing it’s doors. We have put our landlords in a tough situation and we can’t come to terms on a lease moving forward. For the record they have been there for us and worked with us numerous times over the years. I can’t thank all of the people that have worked with and for us over the years and all the customers that have been loyal since I was a child. I have a very heavy heart but it’s also a freeing feeling that I have not felt in my adult life. Not sure what to say but I have love for all my family and friends.
We will mourn the loss of this mom- and pop-owned restaurant, which has been open since 1991 and was run by two generations of the Enis and Boverman family. Stella Blues Cafe has won countless Best of Maui Awards, including Best Breakfast, Best Dinner and a Show and Best Business Lunch. It was also a great music venue.
As a tribute to Stella Blues’ legacy, we’ve put together this collection of photos from Sean M. Hower that have appeared in MauiTime…
